'Serial' fans set up scholarship to honour victim Hae Min Lee
FANS OF THE PODCAST Serial have decided to honour the woman at the centre of the story, Hae Min Lee, by raising money for a scholarship in her name.
The massively popular show will post its final episode on Thursday – it explores the case of Adnan Syed, who was jailed in 2000 for the murder of Lee, his ex-girlfriend.
Journalist Sarah Koenig has been digging into Syed’s case for over a year to determine whether or not he is guilty and presenting her findings each week.
Now, avid fans who discuss the podcast on Reddit’s Serial forum are trying to raise $25,000 to donate to Baltimore’s Woodlawn High School, which both Lee and Sayed attended.
Forum moderator Jake White said he had gotten in touch with a guidance counsellor at the school, who agreed to enact the scholarship:
At the time of writing, over $900 had been raised.
Previously a man claiming to be the brother of Hae Min Lee posted in the forum, saying the podcast sensationalised his sister’s murder, and admonishing Redditors for demanding that the family respond:
